Continuous Glucose Monitors

Want to prevent Type 2 Diabetes? Reduce your risk of dementia? Improve your energy? Burn fat better? Decrease cravings?

Then you REALLY need to know your daily blood sugar trends

Not too long ago, the only way for most people to know their blood sugar levels was to go to an annual physical and have a blood draw for a fasting blood sugar reading (or A1C). Because the blood sugar test is fasting, the major flaw is that you aren’t able to see how the foods you eat are affecting your blood sugar and which foods specifically cause the highest spikes (the most dangerous).

SO many people are having blood sugar issues and a huge number of cases are either undiagnosed or undisclosed. Between 2017 and 2020 38% of all US adults had prediabetes, but only 19% were told by a health professional that they had it. And another 1 in 10 have Type 2 Diabetes, but 1 in 5 people don't know they have it. If you are someone who is data driven or who might have a hard time with sugar over the holidays or who wants to really optimize your health then….

Enter Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM). If you’ve noticed people wearing circular tape on the back of their arms on their triceps, underneath is a CGM. These gadgets are thankfully becoming more accessible. In the past, most CGMs were by prescription only by your doctor and required a diagnosis of diabetes. This is WAY too late in our opinion, since diabetes takes a decade or more to develop.

Our medical system does not catch the early development of blood sugar imbalances, it only flags in diseased states when there is elevated blood sugar during fasting. Thankfully, many startup companies are making CGMs available to all - they still require a doctor to sign off, but they do that all for you behind the scenes. All you have to do is fill out a quick form, download an an app and insert the monitor.

CGMs give us the ability to see in real time in an app (with literally a tap of your phone to the CGM) what our daily dietary choices are doing to our blood sugar. We can see that the “healthy smoothie” or steel cut oatmeal shoots our blood sugar way up. What we pair carbohydrates with, the order of carbohydrates within a meal or time of day can also make a difference on blood sugar levels. With this information, better associations can be made between what our blood sugar is doing and how we feel. Lastly, we can learn how physical activity modulates blood sugar levels.

And this data is unique to each individual. Some people are highly carbohydrate sensitive and don’t see many spikes, even with higher carbohydrate foods. Others can see large spikes with lower carbohydrate or even “healthy” carbohydrate sources. See some examples of how different choices can alter blood sugar:

Okay, that was a lot of examples…but I wanted drive home how variable blood sugar levels can be AND how we also have a lot of control over the levels.

So how do you get a CGM? Unfortunately, most companies offering CGMs are expensive (think $300+ per month) and require a coaching program along with it. If that works for you, great! We however, we prefer Veri. Their pricing is roughly half of the others available and you can get them now at 20% off! If a CGM is something you are interested in, I highly recommend getting in on this deal! Also, feel free to work with us along with it! :)
