Breakfast Is The Most Important Meal Of The Day To Not Screw Up

Did you know that what you eat for breakfast dictates the metabolic state of your body the rest of the day? If you start your day off with highly refined carbohydrates and simple sugar (toast, donuts, waffles, cereal, granola bars, fruit, fruit juice, instant oatmeal, some protein bars) or if it’s low in healthy fats, protein and fiber, you will have problems with satiety, blood sugar control, mood and fat burning throughout the day.

Starting with a thoughtfully planned breakfast sets the rest of your day up for success!

Here are the best breakfast foods:

  • Eggs: Eggs are substantial enough to keep you feeling full for hours. Egg yolks provide all the healthy fats and micronutrients and the whites provide the protein. You get 6g of protein per egg. Shoot for getting 20-30 grams of protein per meal; this means minimum 3 eggs at a time if not adding cheese, breakfast meat, or leafy greens.

  • Regular yogurt: Greek or fermented kefir is the way to go. Greek has extra protein and kefir has minimal lactose and is generally easier to digest for those with dairy intolerances. Berries are best for blood sugar control + fat burning.

  • Avocados: are rich in monounsaturated fats, omega-3, and omega-6 fatty acids. All these seem to play a role in the healthy functioning of the heart and circulatory system. As far back as 1988, in research published in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers have found that including monounsaturated fats in your diet could improve glycemic control.

  • Low glycemic smoothie: Do you drink a commercially made green drink? Have you looked at the sugar content? Naked brand Green Machine has 34 grams of sugar per serving, that is almost as much sugar as a soda! To stabilize blood sugar levels, most adults should keep their added sugar intake to below 25 grams per day. In our smoothies, we like to add yogurt as mentioned above with protein sources like whey, collagen or nut butters. For fruit, full serving of berries or 1/2 serving of other fruit of choice like banana. We also love grain-free granola like from Purely Elizabeth.
